Cantor Sharon Hordes received a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Indiana University School of Music. She received her cantorial training through a joint-program established by the Reconstructionist Rabbincal College in Wyncote, PA and Gratz College in Melrose Park, PA. In June 2002 she became the first cantor to become invested through the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College. For six years she served as the full-time Cantor at Ramat Shalom in Plantation, FL. At that time, she was active with an interfaith dialogue group called “Jews and Muslims and All” that formed after 9/11. She relocated to Louisville, KY, her husband George’s home town, to teach Hebrew and Judaica classes at Eliahu Academy. She became the cantor of Keneseth Israel in the summer of 2008 where she enjoys getting to celebrate Kabbalat Shabbat with her daughter Leah every Friday morning at KI Preschool. She also serves on the board of the National Council of Jewish Women, Louisville section and has recently spoken about religious and gender issues on a panel at the local Dialogue on Diversity conference earlier this month. Cantor Hordes is a member of the Cantors Assembly and the Women Cantors Network.
